Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that addresses the size, shape, or profile of your nose. This surgical procedure, like any surgery, includes an incision that cuts through the skin. The natural healing action of the body contributes to scarring to allow for healing and prevent infection. However, no one wants to see a big scar after nasal surgery. Here we provide a better understanding of why scarring occurs and what you can do to minimize potential scarring concerns.
What Causes a Scar?
Scar formation is a natural part of the body’s healing process. When the skin is damaged, such as through an incision, the body grows new tissue to help close the wound. This new tissue is primarily made of the protein collagen. The increased collagen keeps the incision sealed and allows for healing. Over time, the scar fades and, in most cases, becomes less noticeable.
Rhinoplasty Technique Matters
Rhinoplasty is performed in one of two ways. Closed rhinoplasty, or endonasal rhinoplasty, is an innovative technique that works for minor nasal concerns, such as straightening the nose or correcting a dorsal hump. This technique places an incision inside the nostril, where any potential scarring will be invisible to others.
Open rhinoplasty, or external rhinoplasty, requires an incision along the columella, or the bit of skin and tissue that separates the nostrils. While this type of rhinoplasty is more common because it gives easier access to the full anatomy of the nose, a skilled surgeon can still help ensure your scar is virtually invisible.
Tips To Minimize Scarring
Certain factors can increase your risk of scarring after a nose job. These can include smoking, hypertension (high blood pressure), underlying skin or inflammatory conditions, or tension on the incision site. Some tips to help boost your body’s healing ability and reduce the risk of scars after rhinoplasty include:
- Stop smoking
- Eat a healthy diet
- Avoid touching your nose during the first two weeks after surgery
- Follow post-surgical instructions from your surgeon
- Apply cold compresses to the nose to reduce inflammation
- Massage the soft tissue around the nose after the two-week mark to help break up scar tissue
- Attend all post-surgical appointments with your surgeon
- Avoid direct sun exposure for at least two months after your procedure
- Apply lotions or oils as directed
