Your Rhinoplasty Consultation
During your rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Davis will assess your concerns and examine your nose and face. He will then use the VECTRA 3D image software to "morph" or change your nose on the computer screen so you can see what the proposed changes will look like. Depending on your individual goals and starting point, he may also recommend combining your rhinoplasty with a chin implant so your result gives a balanced profile. You will have an opportunity to ask all your questions and discuss the 3D images during this visit.
The Procedure
During your rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Davis will lift the skin of the nose with only a very small external excision hidden under the nose to expose the underlying bone and cartilage supportive structures. He then will make the changes to the structures necessary to create the desired shape of your nose and also improve breathing. When necessary, extra skin from the base of the nose can be removed to narrow the width of the nostrils. The surgery takes around 3 to 4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
Rhinoplasty Recovery
After surgery, you will have packing in your nostrils and a splint on the outside of your nose. You will return to the office the next day, and we will continue to check on you as you recover and are, of course, here and available any day if you have any questions or concerns. The splint is removed at your one-week appointment.
Recovery from a rhinoplasty takes about 1 to 2 weeks. That first week, you’ll be a bit bruised and swollen but will be feeling very good at the end of the week. Many patients like to sleep in a recliner or with their head elevated on extra pillows to help reduce swelling. After the first week, you can gradually increase your activity level, and most of the bruising can be covered with makeup at 2 weeks. You can begin strenuous exercise and rigorous activity at 8 weeks.
Rhinoplasty Results
Because the nose continues to settle and refine for up to a year, your results will keep improving well past your initial recovery. Most of our Sacramento rhinoplasty patients notice a real change as soon as the splint comes off at one week, with the bridge, tip and overall proportions becoming sharper as lingering swelling resolves over the following months.

Rhinoplasty surgery is one of my favorite surgeries to perform – the surgery's technique and nuance to change the shape of the nose can make such a dramatic difference in one's appearance and self-confidence.
Every rhinoplasty is priced individually, since the cost depends on your specific goals, the complexity of the changes involved and whether a functional correction such as a septoplasty is needed alongside the cosmetic work. The most accurate number will always come from your consultation.
In most cases, insurance does not cover rhinoplasty performed for cosmetic reasons. If your surgery also corrects a functional issue, such as a deviated septum affecting your breathing, that portion of the procedure may qualify for coverage. Our office can help you understand what your insurance company will require and which parts of your surgery might be eligible.
Most patients are surprised by how manageable their discomfort is after rhinoplasty. You can expect some pressure, congestion and mild soreness in the first few days, especially while the packing and splint are in place, but this is generally well controlled with prescribed pain medication. Discomfort steadily improves over the first week and continues to fade as you heal.
Yes. While analyzing the facial profile, I take into consideration the strength of the chin and how it relates to the nose. Sometimes a chin implant with a rhinoplasty is the key to creating a balanced and natural profile.
During the consultation, 3D computer imaging is used to show you a representation of how your nose could look after surgery. This is a great way to discuss your concerns and wishes as well as realistic surgical expectations.
When your splint comes off at 1 week you'll be able to see the early result! Swelling takes a long time to go away in the nose, so your result will continue to show refinement up to a year after surgery.
As with any surgery, rhinoplasty carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, an adverse reaction to anesthesia and temporary numbness or swelling that takes longer than expected to resolve. During your consultation, I will go over these risks with you in detail so you can make an informed decision about whether or not rhinoplasty could be right for you.
Rhinoplasty results are permanent. Because I reshape the underlying bone and cartilage of your nose rather than simply changing the surface, that new structure stays with you as your nose ages.
