Liposuction in Sacramento
If unwanted pockets of fat are keeping you from achieving your ideal figure, then liposuction may be right for you. Most men and women considering liposuction are at or close to their ideal shape and weight. However, they aren't successfully losing the last few pounds with diet and exercise.
Liposuction can be used on most areas of the body. Common areas that liposuction is used to reduce fat, include the love handles, back rolls, double chin, hips, thighs and more — where the majority of us find it hardest to burn the fat. That's why liposuction continues to be one of the most popular aesthetic surgeries performed at our practice each year.

More about Liposuction
Best Candidates for Liposuction
Liposuction is best for those who are at a healthy weight and who have thicker, more elastic skin. The ideal candidate is someone at or close to their goal weight with specific, localized areas of stubborn fat that haven't responded to diet and exercise.
Good candidates:
- Are at or within about 30% of their ideal body weight.
- Have good skin elasticity.
- Want to address specific, localized fat deposits.
- Are in good overall health with no conditions that would complicate surgery.
- Are non-smokers or willing to quit before and after the procedure.
- Have realistic expectations about contouring rather than dramatic weight loss.
Patients with significant skin laxity may find that liposuction alone leaves the skin looking loose. In those cases, Dr. Davis may recommend combining liposuction with other body contouring procedures that can also address loose skin.
Benefits of Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. Key benefits of this procedure include:
- Permanent removal of fat cells from treated areas – fat cells that are removed do not grow back.
- Precise contouring of specific areas that are resistant to diet and exercise
- Can treat multiple areas in a single procedure
- Results that improve over time as swelling resolves over weeks and months
- Can be combined with other procedures for more comprehensive results
- Relatively short recovery compared to more extensive body contouring procedures
- Long-lasting results when maintained with a stable weight and healthy lifestyle
Treatment Areas
Liposuction can be performed on almost any area of the body where stubborn fat tends to accumulate. The most commonly treated areas include the abdomen, love handles, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, back, bra line, chin and neck.
Some of the most popular combinations include:
- Abdomen and flanks: The most common pairing, addressing the full midsection in one session
- Inner and outer thighs: Often treated together for balanced leg contouring
- Arms and bra line: A natural combination for patients concerned about upper body volume
- Chin and neck: Frequently combined with facial procedures or performed as a standalone for a more defined jawline
During Your Consultation
During your liposuction consultation, Dr. Davis will discuss your goals and examine your areas of concern and recommend a treatment plan making sure liposuction is right for your needs. If loose skin is also a concern, he may suggest combining your liposuction with another body contouring procedure such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift or as part of a mommy makeover. You can also share any specific concerns and have all of your questions answered.
Come prepared to discuss your medical history, any medications or supplements you're taking and your weight history. This information helps Dr. Davis determine whether the timing is right for body contouring and what approach will produce the best result for your specific anatomy. The consultation is also a good opportunity to ask about recovery, what results realistically look like at different stages of healing and what you can do to maintain your outcome long-term.
Liposuction Technique
Prior to going into surgery, Dr. Davis will mark the areas of your body that are going to be treated. These markings serve as a guide in surgery to ensure the best possible shape and symmetry. Tiny incisions hidden in the natural lines of your body are used to insert a wand-shaped medical device called a cannula. The cannula suctions away the targeted fat cells for a more defined shape.
Dr. Davis uses a technique called S.A.F.E. lipo which was pioneered by Dr. Simeon Wall and involves: Separation; Aspiration; Fat Equalization. This allows for the right amount of fat to be removed and result in smooth contours. The surgery takes anywhere from 1 to 4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
Recovery after Liposuction
After surgery you will be placed in a compression garment and will return to the office the next day for us to check on you. We will continue to check on you as you recover and are of course here and available any day if you have any questions or concerns.
Recovery from liposuction is quite rapid in almost all cases. You'll feel sore for a few days but should be feeling good within a week. Bruising can last a few weeks. After the first week, you can gradually increase your activity level, and strenuous exercise can resume at around 4 weeks.
Dr. Davis generally recommends wearing a compression garment for 6 weeks after surgery to reduce swelling and enhance results. Swelling is very normal and takes weeks to months to fully resolve. Most people are back to their usual routine within a week and back to exercise in about 3 to 4 weeks.
Liposuction Results
Most patients begin to see early results within the first few weeks as initial swelling starts to subside, though the treated areas will still feel firm and look somewhat puffy during this window. By 6 weeks, significant improvement is typically visible and most patients feel comfortable in fitted clothing again.
Swelling continues to resolve gradually over 3 to 6 months. Around the 6-month mark, most people are able to see a clear picture of what their final results will look like.
While the fat cells that were removed are gone permanently, the remaining fat cells in the body can still expand with weight gain. Patients who maintain a stable weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise tend to enjoy their results for years to come.

No, liposuction is not typically covered by insurance, as it is considered to be an elective procedure.
Results from liposuction can be very long lasting. Patients who are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and weight after surgery will make their results look even better.
Current safety standards that are set by the research teams in our field recommend removing a maximum of 5 liters of fat and fluid for an outpatient surgery. This is plenty for what most patients need, but occasionally there is someone who would benefit from having liposuction done in stages. Your safety is most important to me!
Yes, that day after surgery some of the fluid that is injected into the fat prior to suctioning it can leak out of the incisions. That's why we send you home with some absorbent chux pads to put down on the seat of your car and your bed to help keep everything clean!
Liposuction is a great procedure for improvement of body shape and figure. Even though fat is being removed, it will not likely make a significant difference in your overall weight.
Great question! If a patient is just having liposuction, then yes, the fat is discarded. However, it is becoming more and more popular to purify the fat and then inject it into another part of the body for a natural augmentation. This is how a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is done.
